Chicago The Musical Louisville's history
Based on real-life events, Chicago The Musical tells a serious story with plenty of comedy, dramatization and embellishment. Journalist Maurine Dallas Watkins wrote a play of the same name based on her perceptions of celebrity female criminals in 1926.
Years later in the 1960s, Broadway actress Gwen Verdon read the play and loved it. Verdon asked her husband, famed dancer and choreographer Bob Fosse, to turn it into a musical. When it finally happened in 1975, with Verdon in the lead role of Roxie Hart, an ingenue housewife turned murderer, the play achieved only a moderate success.
After multiple international productions, the show returned to Broadway in a 1996 revival that was much more popular than its original run. A highly acclaimed 2002 movie portrayal of the musical gave the show more fuel. It continued selling out performances on Broadway even after its 20-year anniversary in 2016.
Chicago The Musical Louisville's biggest hits
Perhaps the most popular song of the whole production is "All That Jazz." It's a catchy tune with lyrics about how people liked to have fun during the Prohibition era, describing their fast and loose lifestyle.
