About Chivas de Guadalajara

Club Deportivo Guadalajara, better known as Chivas, is one of the most storied and passionate football clubs in Mexico. Founded in 1906 as Union Football Club by Edgar Everaert in the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco, the club was renamed Club Deportivo Guadalajara in 1908 to foster a deeper connection with the local community. Chivas competes in Liga MX, the top division of Mexican football, and plays home matches at Estadio Akron, a 48,071-seat venue designed to resemble a volcano. The club is one of four most popular in Mexico and one of seven that have never been relegated from the top flight.

What sets Chivas apart from every other club in Mexican football is their Mexican-only player policy. Chivas is the only Liga MX club that does not sign foreign or naturalized players unless they are of Mexican descent. This commitment to homegrown talent has made the club a launching pad for internationally recognized players, including Javier Hernandez, Carlos Vela, and Carlos Salcido. The cantera (youth academy) system remains central to the club's identity, producing generation after generation of players who go on to represent Mexico on the world stage.

The golden era of Chivas, known as El Campeonisimo, ran from 1955 to 1970. During that stretch, the club won seven league championships, two cups, three CONCACAF titles, and seven Champion of Champions trophies. Chivas remains the only team in Mexican football history to win four consecutive league titles, capturing the championship in the 1958-59, 1959-60, 1960-61, and 1961-62 seasons. Key figures from that era, including Salvador Reyes, Jaime Gomez, Guillermo Sepulveda, and Jose Villegas, helped define the club's legacy.

How many Liga MX championships have Chivas de Guadalajara won?

Chivas de Guadalajara have won twelve Liga MX titles, making them one of the most decorated clubs in Mexican football. Their championship years span from the legendary El Campeonisimo era through to the modern game. Beyond the league, Chivas have also captured four Copa MX titles, seven Campeon de Campeones trophies, one Supercopa MX, and two CONCACAF Champions Cup titles. The club also reached the final of the 2010 Copa Libertadores, becoming only the second Mexican team to play for that title. Chivas hold the Liga MX record for the longest winning streak at the start of a season, opening the Bicentenario 2010 campaign with eight consecutive victories.

Who are Chivas de Guadalajara's biggest rivals?

Chivas de Guadalajara's most intense rivalry is with Club América. Known as El Super Clasico, this matchup functions as a national derby and was ranked 12th on FourFourTwo's list of the 50 biggest derbies in world football. The rivalry carries weight far beyond the pitch, representing a cultural divide between Guadalajara and Mexico City. Chivas also contest the Clasico Tapatio against cross-city rivals Atlas F.C., a derby dating back to 1916 that is considered the oldest football rivalry in Mexico. Historically, the Clasico Tapatio reflected social differences within the city, with Chivas representing the working and middle classes and Atlas drawing from a more affluent base.

What awards and achievements define Chivas de Guadalajara's legacy?

Chivas de Guadalajara's trophy cabinet reflects over a century of competition at the highest levels of Mexican and continental football.
  • Twelve Liga MX titles, including four consecutive championships from 1958-59 through 1961-62
  • Four Copa MX titles
  • Seven Campeon de Campeones trophies
  • One Supercopa MX
  • Two CONCACAF Champions Cup titles, most recently in 2018
  • Runner-up in the 2010 Copa Libertadores
The club also became the first team in Mexican history to win a domestic Double (league and cup in the same season) on two separate occasions, achieving the feat in the 1969-70 season and again in the Clausura 2017 campaign.

What is the fan culture like for Chivas de Guadalajara?

Chivas de Guadalajara commands one of the largest and most devoted fan bases in the Americas. A 2016 study found that Chivas was the most popular football club in Mexico, with 44.2% of surveyed supporters backing the team. Forbes estimated in 2020 that Chivas was the most valuable club in Liga MX and sixth overall in the Americas, valued at approximately $311.5 million. The nickname "Chivas" (Goats) originated from a 1948 Liga Mayor match against Tampico, when fans and local press used the term to describe the team's spirited playing style. The club's other nickname, Rebano Sagrado (Sacred Herd), traces back to the 1956-57 championship celebration, when the Archbishop of Guadalajara reportedly revealed a Chivas jersey beneath his cassock during the victory parade. Three organized supporter groups, known as barra bravas, follow the club: La Irreverente, Barra Insurgencia, and Legion 1908. Their presence at Estadio Akron creates an atmosphere rooted in tradition, regional pride, and a deep connection to the club's Mexican-only identity.
