From Child Performer to Celebrated MusicianChristopher Scott Thile grew up around music, listening to bluegrass bands with his parents and learning to play the mandolin at the age of five. When Thile was eight, he and his friends Sean and Sara Watkins formed Nickel Creek in 1989, performing at several bluegrass festivals and recording its first album in 1993. The band's breakthrough came in 2000 with the release of its self-titled third album. The band parted ways in 2007 but got back together again to release an album and put on a tour in 2014. In 2006, Thile formed the band Punch Brothers as he recorded his studio album How to Grow a Woman From the Ground. The band has released four albums and two EPs together, with its 2018 album, All Ashore, winning a Grammy Award. Thile is actively involved in many projects past and present, appearing on the recordings of several different artists, writing and recording solo albums, performing a mandolin concerto and hosting a radio show.
