Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella
Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella is a musical by the famous Broadway creators Richard Rodgers (music) and Oscar Hammerstein III (lyrics and original book). Originally created for television, Douglas Carter Beane adapted this version for the stage. It is not related to Disney’s Cinderella.
Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella opened on Broadway in March 2013. This version adds dimensions of government oppression, injustice and rebellions, deleting some characters and adding new ones. But the story still retains the best-known songs from the original television version and adds a few more from the Rodgers and Hammerstein catalog.
The team of Rodgers and Hammerstein created some of the most beloved stage musicals in history. South Pacific, The King and I, Oklahoma!, State Fair, The Sound of Music and Carousel all came from their collaborations. Cinderella was their foray into television. Their contributions to theater, such as “thought-provoking plots with mature themes,” went on to influence scores of followers. These musicals are continually revived and performed around the world.
The original production appeared live on Sunday, March 31, 1957, on the east coast, with a delay for the west coast. It was seen by more than 107 million people, one of the largest audiences for broadcast television to that time.
It was remade for television in 1965, featuring Lesley Ann Warren and Ginger Rogers, and 1997, featuring Brandy Norwood and Whitney Houston. Also, almost right away, the production moved to the stage, from London in 1958 to the U.S. in 1961. Several of these productions featured well-known television actors.
