Cirque du Soleil OVO
Cirque du Soleil’s OVO is a traveling acrobatic circus with an insect theme and story. Deborah Colker created, wrote, directed and choreographed the show. Colker, a dancer, found inspiration in the world of insects, particularly their movement. It is the movement of that life, that, “permeates the entire show.” The “creatures” fly, leap, bound and crawl about the stage with music composed by Berna Ceppas. Inspired by and infused with Brazilian rhythms and textures, this show is a must-see event. The production premiered in Montreal, Canada in 2009. It has one of the largest and most ambitious flying acts ever undertaken by Cirque du Soleil.
Deborah Colker
Brazilian-born Colker played piano and volleyball in her youth. Graciela Figueroa, an Uruguayan dancer, introduced her to contemporary dance. Figueroa led a troupe called Coringa, which was famous in the 1980s in Rio de Janeiro, Colker’s hometown. In the mid-eighties, she joined Brazilian theater with the title of “director of movement,” a position and title created just for Colker.
In 1994, she created a dance company of her own, the “Companhia de Danca Deborah Colker.” The company quickly went on to international fame performing around the world in some of the most famous venues. Other ballet and dance companies have performed some of the original pieces in the company’s repertoire.
Cirque du Soleil
Founded near Montreal, Canada, in the early 1980s, Cirque du Soleil grew out of a group of street performers who just wanted to entertain. An idea of presenting a kind of circus, sans animals, began to form. With wild acrobatics, outrageous costumes, “magical” lighting and original music, they called it Cirque du Soleil—Circus of the Sun—because the “sun symbolizes youth, energy and strength.”
