Cirque du Soleil: OVO live at Manchester Arena
Cirque du Soleil's OVO show made its premiere in Montreal, Canada, in 2009. The show was imagined, written and directed by Deborah Colker, a Brazilian writer, director and choreographer who organised the 6,000-plus volunteers who danced in the opening ceremony for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The show's soundtrack was created by composer Berna Ceppas, who took her inspiration from the music of Brazil.
OVO is a dynamic exploration of movement told through the eyes of insects. The word "ovo," which means "egg" in Portuguese, is central to the show's thematic content, which concerns nature and the cycle of life. Depicting a colourful, energetic insect ecosystem that features ladybirds, spiders, dragonflies, ants, butterflies, mosquitoes and more, OVO tells the tale of what happens when a mysterious egg suddenly appears in this bustling insect world.
As with any Cirque du Soleil show, audience members can expect OVO to be full of heart-stopping antics that stretch the bounds of what they thought possible for the human body. Performers will amaze the audience with feats of foot juggling and hand balancing, beautiful, fluid acrobatics with aerial straps, contortion, diabolos, slackwire, powertrack, aerial cradle and so much more. It's feat after feat, all contained within the fascinating, vibrant world created by set master Gringo Cardio and costume designer Liz Vandal.
OVO's touring cast features 50 performers from 17 nations, including the UK's very own gymnast, Alanna Baker. Baker takes on the role of the Black Spider, reprising her performances on Cirque du Soleil's tours through Australia and Japan.
