Founded by former street performers, Cirque du Soleil has come a long way since their start back in 1985. With the production company becoming world renowned, Cirque du Soleil can now boast an impressive 20 different shows running across the globe. As such Cirque du Soleil has earned themselves a number of awards through the years, and with good reason. Adhering to the "nouveau cirque" genre, the production prides themselves on being animal free, hiring the most talented and gifted performers performing in some of the most illustrious venues all over the world. Their shows are defined by their story-book narrative, highlighted with amazing acrobatics with a dash of magic, and the lack of animals certainly puts the production in high regard. Varekai's story, in particular, follows Greek legend Icarus (post-sun) as he discovers the secret world of Varekai. Cirque du Soleil Varekai global tour
Originally conceived in 2002, Varekai premiered in Montréal receiving an impressive amount critical praise. In the words of writer/director Dominic Champagne, "The word Varekai pronounced ver-ay-'kie means 'wherever' in the Romany language of the gypsies - the universal wanderers.", with Varekai paying tribute to the nomadic soul and circus tradition. Considering the story tells not of Icarus' fall from grace, but his journey getting back up, it's easy to see the relation and theme with the eternal travellers. As the show features incredible feats of strength, for example, the "Flight of Icarus" that literally sees our protagonist hurtling through the air, you'll have your heart in your throat throughout the show.
Consisting of an international cast 50 performers and 50 crew members, Varekai not only features some of the world's most talented performers, but also an impressive array of costumes (600 to be precise, each one tailor-made), a music score devised by Violaine Corradi and a set designed to blow your breath away.
Varekai's world music
With Violaine Corradi having composed the music, considering the travelling nature of the show Corradi's influence for the score include the likes of music from Hawaiian rituals, 11th-century troubadours from the south of France and traditional Armenian gospel music and melodies. Suffice to say, what you can expect is quite a mixture of world music, and couple that with the vibrant set design, Varekai isn't just about the performers, but the atmosphere around them.
