History

There are few musical genres that have as deep or rich a history as that of classical music, a genre that has been in existence for hundreds of years and is a mainstay of the music scene as a whole. Differing from genres such as pop or rock, classical music has been a popular style of music for hundreds of years, first rising to prominence around the eleventh century but having roots that stretch back the "medieval period" of 500-1400. A staple of the music scene for hundreds of years, much of what is now considered as traditional aspects of the genre were put into place during the period known as the "common practice period" of 1600-1900. It's interesting to note, but the genre wasn't actually coined as "classical" until the mid 19th century when the term was used to generalize the period of Bach and others as a sort of golden age. As genres rise, fall, and evolve with the changing directions and fads of the music scene, classical music will remain as one of the greats for countless years to come.
