Juno-award winning singer-songwriter and guitarist Colin James is one of the preeminent names in blues revival. With nearly 20 albums to his name, the Canadian blues legend performs for audiences around the world, occasionally collaborating with such greats as Steve Winwood, Little Feat and Keith Richards. Although James tours primarily in his native Canada, he occasionally makes stops in the U.S.
Colin James's background
Born Colin Munn, James was raised on folk and blues his native Saskatchewan. As a young boy, he learned to play the mandolin, the penny whistle and, of course, his beloved guitar, eventually quitting school to devote himself to music full time. He joined a series of bands, including the Hoodoo Men and the Night Shades, earning the opportunity to open for many blues greats and eventually catching the eye of role model Stevie Ray Vaughan, who invited him to open for him.
He was spotted by Virgin Records and quickly signed with the label. His self-titled debut album followed in 1988 and made history by becoming one of the fastest selling albums in Canadian history. It was certified double-platinum and spawned two hit singles -- "Voodoo Thing" and "Five Long Years." The album, which won James the 1989 Juno Award for Most Promising Male Vocalist of the Year, remains the best-selling of his career.
James's later discography
Colin James followed his smash-hit debut with his sophomore album, Sudden Stop, in 1990. The album earned him two more Juno Awards at the 1991 awards ceremony: he received the award for Best Male Artist, as well as the award for Single of the Year, which recognized his hit "Just Came Back." The song also rose to No. 7 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Songs chart.
In 1993, he released Colin James and the Little Big Band, then followed this with Bad Habits in 1995, an album which won James yet another Juno Award for Best Male Artist. His 1997 album National Steel received the Blues Album of the Year Award at the Junos. The following year, the Juno Awards recognized James with the Producer of the Year Award for his work on the 1998 album Colin James and the Little Big Band II. This latest Juno rounded out his total wins to an astonishing six awards.
