Prior to that, he was on the coaching staff for both the North Carolina Tar Heels and the South Carolina Gamecocks. Holbrook played for the Tar Heels from 1990 to 1993 and began his coaching career with them as an undergraduate assistant coach in 1994. Holbrook is the sole active coach to have made eight NCAA Super Regional appearances, six College World Series appearances and five appearances in the national championships and to hold two national championship titles. He is assisted on the field by Associate Head Coach/Recruiting Coordinator Kevin Nichols; Assistant Coach/Pitching Coach Will Dorton; and Volunteer Assistant Coach Nolan Belcher.
