Baseball has a long history in Columbia, South Carolina with the first professional baseball game in Columbia being played in 1867. Minor League baseball came to the Capital City in 1934 when the Boston Red Sox launched the Columbia Sandlappers. Today, Columbia is home to the Single-A affiliate of the New York Mets, the Columbia Fireflies. The Fireflies were created for the 2016 season after the city experienced a 12-year stretch with no team. The 2004 Columbia team, known as the Bombers, was also an affiliate of the Mets but left Columbia due to a disagreement with the city regarding a new ballpark. After the Mets moved their operations, the city of Columbia voted to build a new ballpark to attract a new team. The Mets, who had taken over the Single-A squad that played in Savannah Georgia, had gone on a successful run there but started the 2016 season back in Columbia and called the new team the Fireflies.
