About Combichrist
The brainchild of esteemed Norwegian musician Andy LePlegua, Combichrist would be unofficially formed as LePlegua experimented with a powernoise and techno crossover under a very different name - D.r.i.v.E. LePlegua would repackage his work D.r.i.v.E under the name Combichrist, and release a full length album with the german label Out of Line. Though Andy's early years had been primarily Euro focused, he eventually found himself shipping off to none other than Atlanta, Georgia, which would become an unlikely home for one of the most prominent EBM bands in the world.
Though LePlegua has a variety of side projects, Combichrist would really start to kick into action in 2003, releasing a string of hits that would avalanche into multiple releases every year for nearly a decade. Physical copies of Combichrist releases would be in high demand, frequently selling out with demand severely outstripping supply of his albums. The Combichrist sound continued to change throughout the years, as LePlegua himself relabeled the genre he was trying to portray and frequently cycled different sounds and instruments in and out of his albums. While the lineup of Combichrist remained in flux with talented musicians all across the musical spectrum coming and going, LePlegua would be the single permanent and guiding factor in the band, pushing the limits of electro music while consistently pleasing both old and new fans alike.
As the band gained in prominence, they would be nearly constantly touring around the world, including a tour alongside legendary rockers Rammstein that took them to all corners of North America. The band would start to jump mediums, being featured in various video game soundtracks as well as the soundtracks of several major motion pictures.
Previous Hits
Combichrist's breakout release would be The Joy of Gunz, which dropped in 2003 and instantly brought LePlegua's newest project into the spotlight. The album was originally self described as techno-body-music, though critics would fit into the aggrotech and power noise genres. The album plays as one single piece but has some standout tracks including "Intruder Alert", "Master Control", and "Human Error".
2005's Everybody Hates You was the much anticipated full length follow up from Combichrist, clocking in at over two hours long and being released in collaboration between Out of Line and Metropolis Records. The band would move more firmly into the aggrotech genre for this release, and it would feature the 2005 megahit "Blut Royale", which would be the album's anthem.
One of the band's most important releases up to that point, Today We Are All Demons would drop in 2009 and garner a respectable four stars from media critic Sputnikmusic. The album contained a score of hit tracks, including the incredibly popular singles "Sent to Destroy", "Scarred," and "All Pain is Gone / Can't Change the Beat". The album would be remixed and be a prominent part of the soundtrack for the hit film Underworld.
Combichrist's most recent release delivered once again, with We Love You dropping this year, carried by singles such as "From My Cold Dead Hands" and "Maggots at the Party". The album has been a described as a return to Combichrist's roots, and has garnered critical and commercial success, including a four out of five rating from Revolver magazine.
Trivia
