Come From Away tells the uplifting true story of the 7,000 stranded passengers who were welcomed and embraced by the citizens from the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, following the tragic events of 9/11. The story is based on the actual experiences and testimony of the people who lived through it. Come From Away took a circuitous route to Broadway. Without any major stars or significant financial backing, the musical transformed from a small production into an award-winning hit with more than 1,000 Broadway performances and major tours all around the world.

Come From Away started out as a rough idea in 2009 by the Toronto-based lawyer and theatre producer Michael Rubinoff. After he approached the writing team of David Hein and Irene Sankoff, the initial idea was developed into a full musical. The book, lyrics and music were all conceived by Hein and Sankoff in the following years based on actual interviews. Come From Away was originally produced by the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego and the Seattle Repertory Theater from 2015. Positive word of mouth steadily became more effusive by the time the musical arrived at the Ford’s Theatre in Washington DC the following year. Buoyed by growing anticipation, the musical made its Broadway debut at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on March 12th, 2017, grossing more than $150 million. On the award circuit, Come From Away made significant waves. The Washington DC production received four awards, including Outstanding Production of Musical, from the Helen Hayes Awards. During the same year, the Broadway production received seven nominations from the Tony Awards, and Christopher Ashley notched the only win with Best Direction of a Musical. It would receive another nomination from the 2018 Grammy Awards for Best Musical Theater Album. When it arrived in London, Come From Away won four Laurence Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical, out of nine total nominations.
