The Copa MX is one of the premiere sporting events in all of Mexico. It brings together teams from across the landscape of Mexican football. The tournament has a long history that dates back to 1907 when Reginald Tower, the British ambassador to Mexico, donated a trophy for an annual competition called the Copa Tower. In the early days, the tournament featured both professional and amateur stages, and it was one of the few events to be played at a national level. The introduction of the official Mexican Football Federation ushered in a new era for the tournament in 1932. For the rest of the 20th century, the tournament became enmeshed with regular season play. After 1997, the Mexican Federation joined Copa Libertadores in South America, essentially abandoning the tournament, but the concept was revived in 2012 with a new format and name. What is the format of the Copa MX?

The Copa MX has undergone significant changes for the 2019–2020 season. Instead of the previous division between Apertura and Clausura, which resulted in two champions every year, Copa MX is now a single tournament that lasts for the entire football season, but just like before, it runs concurrently with league play. The initial group stage features 27 teams from various levels of Mexican football, including 15 from Liga MX and 12 from Ascenso MX. The initial stage of the tournament is divided into nine groups, each of which contains three teams. The winner of each group, along with the seven best runners-up, will advance to the knockout rounds. Each round consists of a home-and-away series. The winner is determined by aggregate score. If the score is tied at the end of regulation, then it will immediately go to shootouts with no extra time. Teams are eliminated through each round of the tournament until a champion is determined.

When does the Copa MX take place?

The group stage begins in the summer and concludes by the end of the year. It takes place at the same time as the Apertura portion of the regular season. The knockout stage begins at the start of the calendar year and runs parallel with the Clausura portion of the regular season.
