The Courtyard is a small theatre housed in a former library in Pitfield Street, Hoxton, along with the iambic wine bar. The Passmore Edwards Free Library building was opened in 1897 and named after the philanthropist who helped to fund it, John Passmore Edwards. It is protected from development under a Grade II listing. The venue itself can seat an audience of 80 in the studio theatre and 150 in the main house. The rooms have played host to a great range of productions including music, theatre and comedy performances. The Courtyard was the premiere location for the first London Horror Festival in 2011, an event that was the result of a unique collaboration between the Theatre of the Damned and The Courtyard. "Cuckoo Comedy" at the Courtyard and "Stamptown Comedy Night" are two of the most popular events in the busy calendar. The shows offer exciting performances by unique alternative and stand-up comedy artists and have been featured in the UK comedy guide "Chortle". The library building is also home to the iambic Bar, which can hold an intimate audience of 100. Audiences flock to enjoy an eclectic selection of live music acts appearing in the bar. A notable recent appearance was by Juanita Stein, whose performance was critically acclaimed. Juanita is the lead vocalist and guitarist in the Irish rock band Howling Bells.
