About The Dirty Rotten Imbeciles
Dirty Rotten Imbeciles sparked up back in 1982, as part of the widely growing and rapidly changing Houston metal scene. The band would be the musical brainchild of guitarist Spike Cassidy and Kurt Brecht on vocals, the two longstanding principal members of the band, with its original lineup also featuring percussionist Eric Brecht and bass slapper Dennis Johnson. The band's early days would be spent jamming on the local Houston club scene, putting out their own self recorded EPs as they built up a grassroots fan base all over Texas. The band would eventually move to San Francisco, trying to make ends meet and struggling for success before eventually nabbing a spot on the Dead Kennedys' Rock Against Reagan tour.
The band continued to bubble just under the surface for the former half of the 1980s, becoming more frequent on the tour scene and occasionally getting their singles included in punk metal compilations. As the 80s grinded on the band began to fall into a niche that was all their own, developing the crossover genre as they blended thrash, metal, and punk influences into an addictive and pioneering brand new sound. The band's new direction would find massive success as they began to tour throughout North America and Europe, releasing a slew of EP and full length recordings, with the band eventually signing onto the Rotten Records label in the early 90s.
The band continued to heat up as they headlined tours across the globe, culminating in the band headlining the Millennium 2000 Tour. Dirty Rotten Imbeciles became known not just for their non stop tour schedule but for their frenzied live antics, with DRI becoming one of the most sought after concert tickets throughout the metal world for much of the late 90s and early 00s. Disaster would strike in the 2003 when frontman Spike Cassidy was diagnosed with colon cancer, and the band would put their tour and recording obligations on full stop as they waited patiently for Spike to recover. Just two years later Cassidy would be declared cancer free, with the band picking up right where they left off.
Today, the band continues to put out a nonstop stream of hit crossover thrash tracks, continuously redefining the genre as the look to put out a brand new EP sometime this year. The band's lineup still includes founders Spike Cassidy and Kurt Brecht, as well as bass guitarist Harald Oimoen (with the band since 1999) as well as recent edition Brandon Karns (who joined in 2014).
Previous Hits
The band's 1988 release 4 of a Kind remains one of their most pivotal pieces to date, a 35 minute tome of crossover thrash metal perfection that became the foundation to the band's post 90s sound. The album featured Spike Cassidy and Bill Metoyer as producers on the album, and features a series of classic Dirty Rotten Imbeciles hits such as "Do the Dream", "Gone Too Long", and "All for Nothing".
1989's Thrash Zone would drop a year later, released on the band's longtime Metal Blade label. The album received positive reviews from AllMusic, and marked the band's second foray into their new crossover thrash sound. The album's single "Beneath the Wheel" would be featured in hit video game Skate 2, as well as receive non stop airplay on MTV. The album also included hit tracks "The Trade", "Drown You Out", and "You Say I'm Scum".
Trivia
When the band first made the move to San Francisco, they would go through tough times to eventually make it big on the competitive NorCal music scene. The band members lived out of a van and ate at soup kitchens, eventually prompting at least one member to give up and quit the band.
