A prolific musical family
Dadju was born in the outskirts of Paris with Congolese roots and grew up surrounded by music. His father performed as a backup vocalist for famous Congolese singer Papa Wemba, while his brother is the renowned rap artist Maître Gims. His mother ensured that he had a strong education in African and religious music, which he credits for helping shape his soulful style. Starting his career as part of an outfit called Shin Sekaï alongside rapper Abou Tall, the duo released an album titled 'Indéfini', which landed at number 8 on the French music charts. The pair, however, decided to go their separate ways in order to focus on their respective solo careers, which turned out to be a wise decision for Dadju. He released his first studio album in 2017, named 'Gentleman 2.0', which received critical acclaim from the French music industry. The breakthrough album reached the number 1 spot on French charts and received diamond certification for selling more than 500,000 copies. Revamping a folk classic
In 2018, Dadju partnered with his brother, Maître Gims, French rapper Naestro and other artists to record a modern rendition of 'Bella Ciao', a famous Italian folk song that was made famous for its stance against fascism during the Nazi regime. The song also has origins dating back as far as the 19th century regarding working conditions faced by rural farmers. The revamped performance of the iconic song translated most of the lyrics to French and reached the number 1 spot on the French singles chart. Dadju and fellow artists who appeared on the ballad were applauded for their take on the historic song and it had a distinct influence on French music culture, encouraging other artists to express political opinions. He has been compared to other artists who have experienced international success, such as Vegedream and MHD, signalling a bright future for the R&B singer.
