Singer-songwriter Dar Williams consistently plays to standing-room-only and sold-out rooms, her rabid fan base turning out to soak in her folk-pop melodies and wide-ranging lyrical insights. Williams’ songs cover topics like loss, religion, gender issues, humor, anti-commercialism and geography; as the New York Times put it, "Wisdom flows through her songs in delirious, wordy rushes of truth."
Williams' songs resonate with people from all walks of life, not least because she writes about real-life instances from personal experience. She’s credited for opening the eyes of a whole new generation to the concept of folk music, and she can still be found at venues like the Scottish Rite Auditorium in Collingswood, N.J., and the Birchmere Music Hall in Alexandria, Va.
Dar Williams’ background
Williams first expressed interest in music as a young child, penning her first tune at the tender age of 11. By the time she got to high school, she had become a full-blown “drama queen,” performing in school musicals and writing her own plays on the side. Several years later, she graduated from Wesleyan University with a double major in religion and theater and migrated to Boston in search of a theater career.
In Boston, Williams experimented with various facets of theater, from directing productions to performing. Eventually, she wound up at the Opera Company in her new hometown and took up lessons with vocal coach Jeannie Deva. It was Deva who urged her to try her hand at peddling her music at cafes and coffeehouses in the area. Williams cut All My Heroes Are Dead and I Have No History, two tapes, but they didn't make any waves on the local music scene.
In 1993, she pulled up stakes again and settled in Northampton, MA, drawn to the town’s more laid-back atmosphere. Her luck changed in 1993 when her breakthrough album, The Honesty Room, arrived. Since then, Williams has continued to release music and cement her status as a folk-pop hero.
Dar Williams’ literary career
Songwriting isn’t Williams’ only artistic talent. She’s also a gifted author, having penned a novel geared toward teens entitled Amalee.
