Das Rheingold - New York Tickets
Das Rheingold New York TicketsDas Rheingold is an opera that dates to the 1860s. It's a very popular work and is still performed frequently at The Metropolitan Opera in New York as well as other venues. Composed by Richard Wagner, this opera marks the starting point for a cycle of compositions that tells a complex story about power and the desire for it. This play takes place long ago, in a far-off world inhabited by creatures from the world of German myths. Gods, giants, dwarves and nymphs are among the beings who take part in the action. The action is set in the Rhine, which gives the opera its name. Over the past 150 years, there have been several versions of this play staged. Today, Robert Lepage's innovative version is touring the United States.
One Ring to Rule Them AllDas Rheingold opens in the Rhine, where some nymphs are swimming in the water around a valuable golden treasure. A dwarf, frustrated by nymphs who reject him, absconds with a ring that will make him all powerful. The trade-off for the power he now has is that he's has to give up on love forever. This simple encounter and quick choice sets a chain of events into motion among the powerful gods, including Wotan. By the end of the opera, it becomes clear that the lust for power over the ring will mean the end of the gods. Though wise Wotan decides to throw the ring away, his action isn't the end of its dominance. Two giants, brothers, get into a deadly fight over the ring, startling all those around them. Eventually, the gods build a bridge to Valhalla and move there, avoiding the ring and the world of humans, at least for the time being.

What can I expect from Das Rheingold?Savvy opera goers will recognize this show as one of the inspirations for JRR Tolkein's Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Robert Lepage production of Das Rheingold has an innovative and unusual set. Known as "The Machine," it's made of 24 wooden planks that are moved around during the performance. At times, the set becomes something of a character in the opera. As it moves and as performers tread on it, the set makes noise. Depending on the perspective, this either adds to or detracts from the production. The set reflects the changing landscape of the world of the opera. By the end of the show, the gods themselves will have had to make a change. The end of the show finds them relocated in far-off Valhalla.
How long is a performance of Das Rheingold?Das Rheingold has an unusual structure for an opera. It's two hours and forty minutes long. That's not so unusual. What is unusual, however, is that the opera is presented as just one act with no intermission.
Is Das Rheingold suitable for children?Das Rheingold may be suitable for teens who are interested in opera or musical theater. Given the long running time and subject matter, young children may lose interest or face content that is complex and potentially inappropriate.
