Dave Chappelle's Background
Dave grew up predominantly in Silver Spring, Md., and Yellow Springs, Ohio, where his parents taught at different universities. His parents split when he was 6 years old, and he divided time between the two cities. Bill Cosby was a big influence in his life, and he always knew that he wanted to be a comedian. Dave developed a natural talent for comedy since he lived a part of his early life in Washington, D.C., where he experienced the harsh realities of being African American within the US capital. The harshness of the city did not hold him back, though, and he entered Duke Wellington School of the Arts and launched his stand-up career. During his stint with Chappelle’s Show, he earned three Emmy Award nominations and made TV appearances with personalities such as James Lipton and Oprah Winfrey. After the first two seasons, the show was immediately renewed for $50 million over a two-year contract. Dave left on hiatus after production for the third season began in 2005 as he was unhappy with how Comedy Central studio execs wanted to change the tone of the show as well as the direction it was headed. He traveled to South Africa for a brief period of time before returning to the United States where he kept his life closed off from public scrutiny. It wasn’t until 2013 when he made his triumphant return to doing stand-up performances.
