From Brian Clough to Peter Shilton
Formed in 1884, Derby County became a member of the inaugural Football League season four years later and in 1895, they moved from their original Racecourse Ground home to the Baseball Ground. Having finished runner-up at three FA Cup finals at the turn of the 20th Century, the Rams finally got the chance to lift the trophy in 1946, when they beat Charlton Athletic 4-1. Derby County's golden period arrived in the early 1970s under the guidance of Brian Clough, who led the side to their first ever top-flight league title win and the semi-final of European football's premier club competition. The club were crowned champions for a second time in 1975, and after a period of unrest on and off the field, bounced back to the upper reaches of the top flight in the late 1980s with a squad including Italia '90 heroes Peter Shilton and Mark Wright. After relocating to Pride Park in 1997, the team spent much of the next two decades in English football's second tier. A passionate and loyal following
Derby County FC are renowned for being one of the most passionately-supported teams in English football. In 2009, they achieved the season's highest league gate with more than 33,000 fans showing up for their encounter against Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, and also boasted a higher average attendance than nine top flight clubs. The atmosphere at Pride Park is perhaps at its most electric when the Rams take on one of their many rivals, from fellow Midlands clubs Nottingham Forest and Leicester City, to Leeds United, the Yorkshire side that Clough famously left Derby County for in the mid-1970s. Former England goalkeeper Scott Carson, Wales captain Joe Ledley and Austrian forward Andreas Weimann are just a few of the internationals who have played in the club's famous black and white colours since the turn of the 2010s. And the club received significant attention in 2018 when ex-Chelsea hero Frank Lampard was appointed manager.
