Desert Hockey Classic TicketsWhen the Arizona State Sun Devils men’s hockey team was first accepted in the NCAA’s elite Division I, the team had no other Division I teams with which it could compete in regional conference tournaments. Indeed, the Sun Devils remain unaffiliated with any conference to this day. To resolve this problem and expose the Sun Devils to Division I-level conference competition, the Desert Hockey Classic was created. The tournament typically takes place on a weekend in either December or January, unlike other regional hockey tournaments which generally are not held until the end of the collegiate hockey season in March. Also, unlike many other regional hockey conference tournaments, the Desert Hockey Classic can have as few as just four participants in a given year. This does not make the competition any less fierce or the action any less exciting, however, as all teams play at the very highest of levels. ASU alumni and collegiate hockey fans all have a chance to become a part of the action and cheer on their beloved teams. Get your Desert Hockey Classic tickets at StubHub today.
Which teams have participated in the Desert Hockey Classic?Participants in the Desert Hockey Classic include the hosting Arizona State Sun Devils, the Michigan Tech Huskies, the UConn Huskies, the Yale Bulldogs, the Brown Bears, the St. Cloud State Huskies, the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs, the Minnesota State Mavericks and the Carkson Golden Knights.
Which teams have won the Desert Hockey Classic? The Michigan Tech Huskies won the inaugural 2015-2016 Desert Hockey Classic. The UConn Huskies won the second annual tournament, which corresponded to the 2016-2017 season. In the tournament associated with the 2018-2019 season, the Carkson Golden Knights were declared the winners.
Which arenas have hosted the Desert Hockey Classic? The first Desert Hockey Classic Tournament took place on the weekend of January 8, 2016, at the Gila River Arena in Glendale, Ariz. The second annual tournament took place on December 30 and 31, 2016, at the Prescott Valley Event Center — renamed the Findlay Toyota Center in 2019 — in Prescott Valley, Ariz. The tournament corresponding to the 2018-2019 season, which was scheduled to happen on December 28 and 29, 2018, returned to the Gila River Arena.
Why was there no Desert Hockey Classic Tournament during the 2017-2018 and 2019-2020 seasons?During the 2017-2018 hockey season, Arizona State was chosen to host the Annual Las Vegas Invitational Tournament. Therefore, the Desert Hockey Classic was cancelled for that year. The tournament has since been renamed the Fortress Invitational. There is no available information for when, or if, there will be a Desert Hockey Classic corresponding to the 2019-2020 season. ASU does not make any references to it in its 2019-2020 hockey schedule, and since seasons in collegiate hockey typically run from October of one year to March of the following year, it does not appear that there will be a 2019-2020 Desert Hockey Classic.
What are some other collegiate hockey events that fans of the Desert Hockey Classic might be interested in?Since Arizona State is an independent Division I team and does not belong to any conferences, it does not participate in any of the standard NCAA hockey conference tournaments. However, those who enjoy the Desert Hockey Classic may also be interested in watching the conference tournaments that other former participants in the Desert Hockey Classic have also participated in. For instance, the Michigan Tech Huskies have also played in the WCHA Tournament and the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs have played in the NCHC Tournament.
