Devil Makes Three formed in Santa Cruz, Calif., in 2002, sustaining a bit of culture shock as the members all hailed from New England. Its special blend of gospel, blues, R&B, ragtime, rock and roll, country, jazz and punk rock, has enabled the group to create a unique brand of Americana music. Guitarist Pete Bernhard credits the band's success to musical influences from legends like Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams, Fugazi and Bob Wills, and literary figures such as Ernest Hemingway and James Baldwin. The group, made up of Bernhard, Lucia Turino and Cooper McBean, is best known for its offbeat style that embraces folk, bluegrass and alternative country. The trio's strength from the beginning has been touring with infectious performances that inspire energetic dancing and unbridled excitement from audiences.
It sometimes seems a minor miracle that Devil Makes Three even formed a band let alone achieved the success and diehard following that it has. While Bernhard and McBean were fairly tight in high school, they had a much more casual acquaintanceship with Turino. And when they graduated, they did not move to California together. McBean and Bernhard eventually would meet up again just north of Santa Cruz, in Olympia, where they performed several punk rock gigs as a duo. Meanwhile, Turino had moved to Santa Cruz, and when she ran into the duo in 2001, the new band Devil Makes Three was born. Its debut album, Devil Makes Three, arrived in 2002 and Longjohns, Boots and a Belt in 2003. Its most successful albums came later with I'm a Stranger and Redemption & Ruin performing best. Large numbers of tours gained them a cult following, but Stomp and Smash brought it invitations to the big music festivals, like the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival that occurs annually.
