First Held: 1996

Diet Coke Classic TicketsThe Diet Coke Classic marks the symbolic start to college volleyball season for Minnesota volleyball fans. In fact, it’s usually their first opportunity to see their team live as its first home match of the season after opening the campaign on the road is normally included within this competition. The Diet Coke Classic features the Golden Gophers and two or three other schools, and they play a round-robin schedule for two or three matches apiece. If you’re a Minnesota volleyball fan, this event has likely been on your sporting itinerary ever since the Golden Gophers announced their season schedule. Conversely, if you’re a fan of one of the other teams participating in this, attending these matches provides a great opportunity to witness this sport in one of its most impressive and atmospheric venues. You might also see one of the teams that will play at the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship at the end of the season. That’s exactly what happened in 2019. When was the Diet Coke Classic first held? The first Diet Coke Classic was played in 1996. Georgia Tech took the title, opening with a dramatic 3–2 win over Minnesota before sweeping Arkansas, 3–0, and taking another 3–2 barnburner over Marshall. The hosts responded to that 3–2 loss to the Yellow Jackets with sweeps over Marshall and Arkansas.
Who won the 2019 Diet Coke Classic?Minnesota had little trouble with its foes at the 2019 Diet Coke Classic as the Golden Gophers swept Clemson and Oral Roberts to claim the title. Clemson defeated Oral Roberts, 3–1, in the other match of that tournament to take second place.
When was the last time that Minnesota lost a Diet Coke Classic match? The Golden Gophers have dominated this competition over the last several years, so much so that it hasn’t lost a match in it since falling in a tight five-setter to Northern Iowa in 2010. The Panthers had entered that match ranked 22nd in the country and showcased that talent in the Twin Cities. Minnesota enters the 2020 campaign with a 58–8 record in Diet Coke Classic matches.
Where is the Diet Coke Classic played?Maturi Pavilion is where every Diet Coke Classic match is played. This venue was formerly the home of Minnesota’s men’s hockey team before it was remodeled in 1993. The volleyball team moved in a year later, and it’s now the home for the school’s volleyball, wrestling and gymnastics squads. It also underwent some recent upgrades, which were ready in time for 2019 Diet Coke Classic ticket holders to enjoy. These included a new air conditioning system, which was a welcome addition to many. A match versus Kansas State in 2019 was even canceled because it was too hot inside the facility.
What are the attendances like at the Diet Coke Classic?Minnesota drew 5,700 or more fans to every regular-season match that it played in 2019, and the Diet Coke Classic event was no different as exactly that number saw the Golden Gophers’ pair of contests in this competition. The crowds were smaller for Minnesota’s Diet Coke Classic matches in 2018 but not by much; they drew 4,914, 4,728 and 4,804 to those respective matches.
What’s the atmosphere like at Diet Coke Classic matches? The atmosphere of Minnesota matches, including the spirit of the Diet Coke Classic contests, has been described as ear-ringing and bone-shaking. Part of the reason for that is how invested Minnesota fans tend to be while seats so close that serving players are only inches from them adds to the intensity.
