Dire Straits Legacy background

Dire Straits was a rock band from Britain that was formed in 1977 with original founding members Mark Knopfler on lead vocals and lead guitar, Pick Withers on drums and percussion, David Knopfler on rhythm guitar and vocals and John Illsley on bass guitar and vocals. The band's first released single, "Sultans of Swing," made the top 10 in the US and UK music charts in 1978. The original Dire Straits band performed over a span of 15 years, disbanding and reforming, until a final dissolution after Mark Knopfler left in 1995 to become a solo artist. Mark Knopfler and John Illsley are the only founding members who performed throughout the band's career, and the band gained and lost many musicians during this time. Dire Straits was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.

Dire Straits' more successful chart-topping hits were "Sultans of Swing," "Walk of Life," "So Far Away," "Money for Nothing" and "Tunnel of Love," which was featured in the movie An Officer and a Gentleman. Their album Brothers in Arms was the best-selling album of 1985 in the UK and was No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in the US for nine weeks. The band's album Making Movies remained on the UK Albums chart for five years and is ranked by Rolling Stone magazine as No. 52 on its "100 Best Albums of the Eighties" list.
