Dirty Dancing Milton Keynes history
Dirty Dancing -- The Classic Story On Stage was written for the stage by Eleanor Bergstein, who also wrote the film Dirty Dancing (one of the most successful independent films of all time). The show was first performed in Australia in 2004, and since that time has gone on to be presented all over the world. When it opened at the West End's Aldwych Theatre in October 2006, the preview shows generated a record-breaking 11 million in advanced sales. Tickets at that venue were sold out for six months straight, making Dirty Dancing -- The Classic Story On Stage the longest-running show in the history of the theatre. Extensive UK and Ireland tours followed in 2013 and 2016-2017. The Observer has called the show "The biggest live theatre sensation of all time".
The Dirty Dancing Milton Keynes experience
For two hours and 15 minutes (including an interval), Dirty Dancing Milton Keynes audiences are transported to Kellerman's resort in New York's Catskill Mountains. It's the summer of 1963, and Frances "Baby" Houseman, who at 17 is brainy and awakening to social issues outside her own world, is spending three weeks at the resort with her parents and older sister Lisa. Organised activities at the resort hold little appeal for Baby, but everything changes when she discovers a raucous, raunchy late-night dance party taking place in the resort's staff quarters. An ensuing chain of events leads to Baby being trained by the resort's dance instructor Johnny Castle to be his dance partner. They will ultimately perform together at the resort talent show in an unforgettable finale.
The film Dirty Dancing is packed with iconic moments, all of which are lovingly recreated on stage. The "watermelon scene", Baby's balance training on a log across a river, and a passionate evening of talking and dancing in Johnny's room are all presented along with hit songs from the original soundtrack, among them "Hungry Eyes", "Hey Baby" and "Do You Love Me?" The resort talent show presents a horribly singing, hula-dancing Lisa, and of course, to the sound of "(I've Had) The Time of My Life", the dance move that made the movie -- "the lift".
