DJ Khaled's background
DJ Khaled grew up in the South as the son of Palestinian parents who were also musicians. He began DJing in Orlando, Florida around the age of 13 and listened to the Isley Brothers, Parliament-Funkadelic and Sam Cooke. DJ Khaled credits his parents for supporting his music career from a young age and cites rap and soul music as his biggest influences. He became friends with artists such as Birdman, Lil Wayne and Mavado early on and helped them launch their careers. Moving to Miami in 1998, he spent years working at a record store and getting acquainted with the local music scene. His career launched when he got a job hosting a Miami-based urban music radio station. He started performing for the hip hop group Terror Squad as a DJ and assisting in the production of hip-hop albums by Terror Squad and Fat Joe. He then released his own debut studio album entitled Listennn... the Album, in 2006.

His debut album premiered on the US Billboard 200 Chart at number 12. His second album, We the Best, peaked at number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 11 on the US Hot Rap Tracks. His songs "I'm On One" and album Major Key were both nominated for Grammy Awards. Some of his other hits include "I'm So Hood" (with Young Jeezy, Ludacris and others), "Wild Thoughts" (with Rihanna) and "For Free" (Featuring Drake). In 2018, he performed "Wild Thoughts" with Rihanna and Bryson Tiller to rave reviews.
