About Don Omar

Don Omar, born William Omar Landrón Rivera in Santurce, a neighborhood of San Juan, Puerto Rico, grew up as the oldest son of William Landrón and Luz Antonia Rivera. He was drawn to Latin hip-hop early, citing Vico C and Brewley MC as formative influences. As a teenager he was an active member of a Protestant church in Bayamón, where he occasionally delivered sermons, before leaving to pursue music full time.

His career took shape in Puerto Rico's underground reggaeton scene. He performed alongside DJ Eliel Lind Osorio, appeared on compilation records from producers like Luny Tunes, Noriega, and DJ Eric, and sang backup for the duo Héctor & Tito. Héctor el Father helped produce his first solo album, and the 2003 release of The Last Don turned him into a star. The album sold 411,000 units in the United States, earned RIAA gold certification, and brought him Billboard Latin Music Awards for Latin Pop Album of the Year and Latin Rap/Hip-Hop Album of the Year.

Don Omar built on that momentum across two decades, helping carry reggaeton from a regional scene to a global genre. King of Kings (2006) became one of the highest-charting reggaeton albums on the US charts and was named by Billboard as the most successful Latin album of the decade. Later releases like iDon (2009) and the Orfanato Music Group projects Meet the Orphans (2010) and MTO²: New Generation (2012) produced hits including "Danza Kuduro" and "Hasta Que Salga el Sol." He also crossed into film as Rico Santos in the Fast & Furious franchise and, after a brief retirement, returned to music in 2019.

Don Omar is a reggaeton artist whose sound also draws from hip-hop, Latin hip-hop, and urban pop. His tracks are built on the genre's signature dembow rhythm, layered with melodic hooks and urban production. Early records like The Last Don leaned on the raw, club-driven sound of Puerto Rico's underground scene, while later projects widened his range: "Danza Kuduro" brought in Latin and Afro-Caribbean textures, and his Orfanato Music Group compilations showcased a roster of rising urban artists. Across his catalog, Don Omar has stayed rooted in reggaeton while adapting to the genre's evolving production.

What are Don Omar's most popular songs?

Don Omar's catalog spans reggaeton anthems and crossover hits. Some of his best-known tracks include:
  • "Danza Kuduro" (with Lucenzo), a global hit featured on the Fast Five soundtrack
  • "Angelito," the single from King of Kings
  • "Virtual Diva," from iDon
  • "Hasta Abajo," from Meet the Orphans
  • "Hasta Que Salga el Sol," which won Best Urban Song at the 2012 Latin Grammy Awards

  • One Billboard Music Award and 17 Billboard Latin Music Awards
  • Three Lo Nuestro Awards
  • Eight Viña del Mar International Song Festival Awards
  • A 2011 Guinness World Record for the most-viewed Spanish-language video on YouTube

What is Don Omar's fan culture like?

Don Omar's fanbase is built around his standing as the "King of Reggaeton," a nickname used by critics and fans alike. His following stretches across the Spanish-speaking world and beyond, and it shows at the box office: his 2015-2016 joint concert series with Daddy Yankee sold out cities like Las Vegas, Orlando, Los Angeles, and New York within minutes. Newer Latin urban performers have cited him as an influence, and his run across two decades has kept a multigenerational audience engaged. For fans of reggaeton's foundational era, Don Omar remains one of the genre's defining live draws.
