This stadium is where the East Carolina Pirates football team plays its home games in Greenville, NC. Named after Skinner Ficklen, once the owner of a local tobacco company and strong supporter of East Carolina University, the stadium opened in 1963. In 1967, renovations increased seating capacity from 10,000 to 20,000. Three further expansions resulted in a current seating capacity of approximately 50,000. The official name of the stadium is now Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium, after the Dowdy family donated to the university in 1994. The field on which the players compete is called Bagwell Field, which is named after another generous family.
