The Class-A Advanced affiliate for the Texas Rangers, the Down East Wood Ducks team is entering only its fourth season of existence. The Wood Ducks organization was created when the Caroline League and the California League came together to discuss realignment. Two California League teams were contracted, and the Down East Wood Ducks were one of the newly created teams in the Carolina League. The name "Wood Ducks" was chosen from a "name the team" contest that saw other options such as "HamHawks," "Hogzillas," "Eagles" and "Shaggers" be mentioned for consideration. In its brief history, the Wood Ducks has already experienced a fair amount of success. The team got into the 2017 playoffs with a losing record but managed to go on to be named Carolina League Co-Champions in its inaugural season. The 2019 Wood Ducks put up an 87-52 record but lost in the first round of the league playoffs. Get your tickets to see the 2020 Down East Wood Ducks today at StubHub.
What is Grainger Stadium like?
Located in the small town of Kinston, N.C., Grainger Stadium was home of Minor League baseball for over 60 years before the Carolina Mudcats moved out of town in 2011. The stadium, initially opened in 1949, was the home of the Carolina Mudcats before the team moved in 2011. It took six years for Kinston to bring in a new team, but now the Wood Ducks play in one of the more historically significant stadiums in baseball. While some stadiums offer local cuisine options at the concession stands, Grainger Stadium doesn't do that. However, local brewery Mother Earth Brewing Company is listed as the official beer of the Down East Wood Ducks. The seating capacity of 4,100 people includes traditional bowl-style seats as well as general admission bleachers down the left field line and a grassy berm, a picnic area and a two-story pavilion in right field.
Who are some notable players that have played for the Down East Wood Ducks?
The newness of the franchise means that there aren't yet any Down East Wood Ducks alumni who have become Major League Baseball superstars. However, some of the top names in the Rangers' farm system either have played or are currently playing for the Wood Ducks.
