The team has a long history, playing their first game ever all the way back in April of 1938. The opponent for this inaugural match was Duke University’s in-state rival, the North Carolina Tar Heels. After winning their first game with a final score of 2-1, Duke University's new men's lacrosse team finished their first season with a 2-5 record. Both of the season's victories were over the Tar Heels, solidifying the rivalry. Since then, the Duke Blue Devils have appeared in 23 NCAA Tournaments. Twelve of these appearances resulted in the team making it to the Final Four round of the tournament, and the team won its first NCAA Tournament Championship in 2010. The Blue Devils followed up this first victory with back to back championships in 2013 and 2014. Caputo registered the first point of his career when he delivered an assist against the Richmond Spiders in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament. Williams is second on the team in 2020 with 20 points. He has scored 12 goals and dished out eight assists over the first seven games of the season.

In Danson's first twelve years as coach of the Blue Devils, he accumulated a 180-55 record and won seven regular-season ACC titles. The Blue Devils lacrosse team also won four ACC Tournament Championships and three NCAA Tournament Championships with Danowski at the helm.
Who are some of the men's lacrosse players that have been honored by Duke University?Kevin Cassese earned All-American honors three times while a lacrosse player at Duke University. He was a first-team All-American selection after both the 2002 and 2003 lacrosse seasons. Cassese was a team leader on Blue Devils teams that won ACC Championships in both 2001 and 2002 and he was named the ACC Player of the year in 2001. In 2002, Cassese was named the Lt. Donald MacLaughlin National Midfielder of the Year. Kevin Cassese is the first Duke Blue Devil lacrosse player to be inducted into the United States Lacrosse Hall of Fame as a player. Max Quinzani is considered one of the best attackmen to play for the Duke Blue Devils and is counted among the most prolific scorers to ever play college lacrosse. Quinzani scored 68 goals and 14 assists for a total of 82 points as captain of the Duke Blue Devils in 2010. Quinzani also helped lead the Blue Devils to the team's first championship in 2010.
