Based in Brisbane, Queensland, DZ Deathrays are an Australian music duo. The band specialises in punk-dance crossover and has been described as pioneering the post-punk revival scene in their home country. DZ Deathrays is made up of Shane Parsons, who plays the guitar as well as providing vocals, alongside Simon Ridley, the group's drummer and backing singer. The band had a notable success in 2012 when their debut album, Bloodstreams, was named as the Best Hard Rock LP at the Australian Recording Industry Association's award ceremony that year.
DZ Deathrays: Aussie hard rockers
Part of the Brisbane-based outfit Velociraptor, a group they both continue to perform with from time to time, Ridley and Parsons decided to form an offshoot musical project from around 2008. Initially, the pair just wanted to inject some energy into parties they were attending as a duo. By 2009, however, the pair were taking DZ Deathrays a bit more seriously. Their debut release was an EP entitled Ruined My Life. Far from being a polished studio work to showcase their musicianship, the EP was recorded entirely live at a house party. Their approach allowed the frenetic energy and performance style of the band to come over in the recording.
In 2011, DZ Deathrays put out a second EP, called Brutal Tapes. This was soon followed by the aforementioned Bloodstreams, which won them much critical praise. One reviewer commented that the bombastic style of the duo's music was 'worth going deaf to'. Produced by the electronica musician Richard Pike, the album came out in the UK on the Hassle label. Praised by NME and other publications in the UK, DZ Deathrays came to Britain in order to promote their LP. They headlined the NME stage at the Great Escape festival and played at the Reading and Leeds festival. Elsewhere, the punk duo took to the stage at A Perfect Day festival in Italy and at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas.
In 2014, the band was back in the studio, working on their follow-up album. Recorded over a two-week period, at Grove Studios near Sydney, Black Rat was produced by Burke Reid. In April of that year, the pair signed a new contract with Infectious Records, based in London. Black Rat was released on that label in the UK and the band returned to Britain in order to tour, taking in Liverpool's Sound City event as they did. Black Rat was released a little later in the year in America and Australia.
Since the release of Black Rat, the founding members of DZ Deathrays have used touring musicians to augment their live sound. These include Mitchell Gregory and Lachlan Ewbank, both guitarists. The band has supported the Foo Fighters, among others. Buy DZ Deathrays tickets now at StubHub and see them live in the UK.
