The men’s basketball team was soaring to greatness on the court long before then. In fact, their infectious enthusiasm of the sport was documented during the regular season of 1921 under the coaching of Elton Rynearson when the team was recognized as the MIAA (D-II) regular season champs. They went on to win three conference titles under the coaching of Ben Braun. With five NCAA title conference appearances with Jim Dutcher at the coaching helm from 1966-72, the Eastern Michigan Eagles have definitely earned themselves a prominent reputation throughout history. Have any former Eastern Michigan Eagles played in the NBA?Through the years, there have been many notable players that were part of the Eastern Michigan Eagles men’s basketball team. Among these individuals were standouts such as Fred Cofield, who played with the Eagles from 1983 until 1985, which was when he was drafted by the New York Knicks. He went on to play for other prominent NBA teams, including the Chicago Bulls in 1988. Other recognized names include Harvey Marlatt and Charles Thomas, who are playing for or have played with the Detroit Pistons; Derrick Dial led the way with teams like the San Antonio Spurs, the Brooklyn Nets and the Orlando Magic; and Earl Boykin is an NBA All-Star who formerly played with the Houston Rockets.
How big is the EMU Convocation Center?The Eastern Michigan University Convocation Center is the stage for all Eagles' home games. This sports center is housed on the west end of campus and features seating for 8,800 during athletic events. The EMU Convocation Center offers 107 lighting instruments for the performance of light shows during the games, pyrotechnic capabilities and lasers situated throughout the arena. There is a well-lit parking lot on-site and easy drop-off and pick-up locations around the complex.

Who is the Eastern Michigan Eagles' head coach?Rob Murphy is currently the head coach for the EMU Eagles men’s basketball team. A Michigan native, Murphy attended Mumford High School in Detroit where he earned high marks in both football and basketball. He went on to be a starter for the men’s basketball team for two years at Central State University in Ohio. Murphy accepted the position of head basketball coach for the EMU Eagles during the 2011-12 season. Throughout his time as the EMU head coach, he has led the Eagles to some of their biggest victories in history, including a 47-44 win over Purdue in his second season with the school.
