Located in the vibrant Mexicantown neighborhood in Southwest Detroit, El Club plays host to an eclectic range of local and national performers. El Club gets high marks from fans for the eclectic range of performers it books, great sound and sight lines, friendly staff and first rate wood-fired pizza.
El Club is housed in the former Mexicantown Fiesta Center, a long-standing fixture in the community that provided a venue for Mexican arts and cultural events. The Center was transformed into El Club in 2016 by Graeme Flegenheimer and his father Eric who acquired the building to bring an all ages venue to Southwest Detroit. Flegenheimer had recently created a similar space in Los Angeles in a former church but wanted to relocate closer to his family in Saginaw, Michigan.
El Club now takes its place on Vernor Highway (the neighborhood's main thoroughfare) in the heart of a colorful district that has provided Detroit with access to authentic Mexican culture since the 1920s.
Most musical genres are represented in El Club's schedule - from various flavors of techno/electronic/dance music to alternative, folk, hip hop, jazz and latin. El Club also books stand-up comedy and other spoken word entertainment.
The venue prides itself on being an all ages destination and includes a lineup of kid- and teenager-friendly shows as part of its event schedule. El Club's owners hope to acquire the adjacent building as a site for after-school arts programs.
Musical events at El Club are general admission, standing room only unless the schedule notes otherwise. Cabaret style and comedy shows are presented in a general admission, fully seated format.
A limited amount of seating is located in the back and on the perimeter of the club on a first-come-first-serve basis, but those seats are not placed or intended for viewing the performances. El Club's main space houses the stage and VIP room, while the adjacent room contains the bar and kitchen.
El Club is easy to find by car - just half a mile away from the Vernor Highway exit of Interstate 75. The Mexicantown neighborhood around El Club boasts dozens of excellent Mexican restaurants and several nearby hotels, including Trumbull + Porter, Aloft and Holiday Inn Downtown.
