Everclear is an alternative rock group that entered the grunge scene shortly before the death of Nirvana's lead singer, Kurt Cobain. The band stood out during an influx of alternative rock bands with the help of college campuses, smaller venues and festivals, such as Atlanta's Midtown Music Festival and The Orpheum. The original band formed in 1991, and it was comprised of Art Alexakis as the lead guitarist and songwriter, Scott Cuthbert as the drummer and Craig Montoya on bass guitar. The only founding member to remain today is Art Alexakis. During its height of popularity and success, Greg Eklund was the drummer. It was not until its second album, Sparkle and Fade, that Everclear began to gain a larger following. Some of its most popular songs during this time were "Santa Monica," "Heroin Girl," "Everything to Everyone," "Father of Mine" and "I Will Buy You a New Life." In 1998, the band was titled the Modern Rock Artist of the Year by Billboard magazine and nominated for a Grammy Award.
Everclear in the Year 2000 and Today
During the 2000s, Everclear has been experimenting with more musical genres on its albums, particularly on Songs from an American Movie, Vol. 1, which had a bit more pop, and Songs from an American Movie, Vol. 2, which was a bit more hard rock. The albums released from 2000 to 2003 had several singles make the charts, including "Wonderful." In 2006, Everclear concerts were being performed all over college campuses across the US. With several more albums having been released, in 2012, Art Alexakis and Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray founded a summer music tour of 90s rock groups that they called Summerland. The band tours with a variety of groups, such as the Gin Blossoms and the Toadies. In 2015, Everclear released the album titled Black is the New Black. This album includes some incredibly powerful lyrics as Art Alexakis writes from some very dark and emotional places. Everclear concerts are still occurring today and reaching an entirely new audience and demographics of alternative rock enthusiasts. The current members include Art Alexakis, Dave French, Freddy Herrera and Brian Nolan.
