Evita is the brainchild of legendary musical impresario Andrew Lloyd Webber. It is based on the true story of Argentine political leader and first lady Eva Peron. The biographical musical covers PeronÕs life, political career and charity work up until her death in 1952. The idea for the musical grew out of a rock opera concept album that Webber and Rice composed in 1976. The two musicians deployed an eclectic range of musical styles from classical to rock to traditional Argentinian rhythms to honor the music of the region. The musical proved to be a hit with audiences, and it has birthed multiple revivals as well as local productions over the years. Evita premiered at the Prince Edward Theatre on June 21, 1978. Legendary musical director Harold Prince, who has won 21 Tony Awards throughout his prodigious career, was involved in the original production. The musical closed in 1986 after more than 3,000 performances. The initial London production received four nominations from the 1978 Laurence Olivier Awards, then known as the Society of West End Theatre Awards, and it won both the Best New Musical award and the Best Performance in a Musical for Elaine Paige. The Broadway production opened at the Broadway Theatre on September 25, 1979. Of the 11 nominations the musical received from the 1980 Tony Awards, the show won seven, including Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, and acting awards for Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin.
