Exeter Chiefs: going from good to better
The Exeter Rugby Club was formed in 1871 and played solidly for the next century in the Devon leagues. With the switch to professional in the 1990s, the club was suddenly catapulted into the limelight and rebranded themselves as the Exeter Chiefs in 1999, taking a nickname they had been loaned back in the 1930s. The Exeter Chiefs logo depicts the proud head of an Indian chief in profile, with red lettering below reminiscent of American baseball or basketball teams. Although it has at times been suggested that the name - combined with fans' behaviour - may be offensive to Native American culture, the club has resolutely stuck by its name and logo. In 2010, the hard work of the Exeter Chiefs squad paid off when the team beat the Bristol Bears in the championship play-offs and was promoted to the Premiership for the very first time. Progressing rapidly through the ranks, they finally won their first Premiership title at the end of the 2016-17 season, beating London Wasps in a tense match at Twickenham Stadium.
Support the talented Exeter Chiefs team
Having proved what they are made of, the Devon rugby players have shown their grit and steely determination to win in every match since that defining moment: tickets to Exeter Chiefs are a sure-fire way to watch some of the most exciting rugby on offer in England today. A new Exeter Chiefs stadium was unveiled in 2006, having been purpose-built to replace the old ground that was in use since 1905. Sandy Park had an original capacity of 12,800 but was rapidly given permission to expand as the club's performance improved and European matches were slated to be held there in the future. The Exeter Chiefs squad has contributed numerous talented players to the England Rugby Union team, including fullback Jack Nowell, and first qualified for the European Rugby Champions Cup in 2018-19. With the team apparently going from strength to strength, exciting times are ahead for the boys in black (or white).
