The 2015 play Farinelli and the King is based upon the true story of the celebrated 18th-century opera singer Farinelli. Famous for his unusually wide vocal range, Farinelli is hired to sooth the mental anguish of King Philip V of Spain, who suffers from bipolar disorder, depression and frequent bouts of insomnia. Farinelli would remain a major fixture and influencer at the Spanish court for decades, even after the death of Philip V. Audiences in New York can experience a live performance of Farinelli and the King on Broadway or other theaters around the city.Baroque Theater
Composer and playwright Claire van Kampen adapted the story of Farinelli and the King for the stage. A musical director at the Royal National Theatre, her previous credits include Hamlet, As You Like It, Richard III and Wolf Hall. After hearing about the story of Farinelli from a singer, van Kampen became interested in its dramatic potential as a stage play. Though a neophyte to the practice of script writing, she wrote the entire book, her first for the stage. Farinelli and the King made its worldwide premiere at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse on Feb. 20, 2015 and then transferred to the Duke of York’s Theatre in September. This production was well-received by critics. It was the recipient of six nominations from the 2016 Laurence Olivier Awards, including Best New Play, Best Set Design, Best Costume Design, Outstanding Achievement in Music, Best Actor in a Play and Best Actress in a Supporting Role. Following its success in London, Farinelli and the King made its Broadway debut at the Belasco Theatre on Dec. 17, 2017, ran for 111 performances and then closed on March 25, 2018. The Broadway production received five Tony Award nominations for Best Play, Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design and Best Actor in a Play.Where can I buy Farinelli and the King New York tickets?

Farinelli and the King is a combination of an historical drama and a psychological exploration of its main characters. The creative team decided to cast two people as Farinelli, one as the actor and one as the singing voice. This was partly done to replicate Farinelli’s unusually high voice but also to reveal Farinelli’s split personalities: One side is the opera personality, and the other side is an ordinary person. The performance, which is mostly lit by candle and features baroque music, transports you back to the 18th century. How long is the running time?
