From French street theatre to Glastonbury
Born in the Ivory Coast in 1982 to Malian parents, Fatoumata Diawara initially pursued a career in acting. After moving to France she appeared in motion pictures "Genesis" and "Sia, le rêve du python", performed in street theatre outfit Royal de Luxe and starred in the musical production, "Kirikou et Karaba". But it was as a singer where she first started to grab international attention. After serving as a back-up singer for her Grammy-winning mentor Oumou Sangaré, Diawara recruited the likes of Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones and legendary West African drummer Tony Allen for her 2011 debut album, "Fatou". A year later she was invited to participate in Damon Albarn's Africa Express Train project, and performed alongside Paul McCartney at its sell-out finale. Diawara went on to appear at the 2013 Glastonbury Festival, collaborate with The Roots as part of the Clinton Global Initiative and release a live album recorded in Marciac in 2015. She continued to simultaneously pursue her acting ambitions during this period too, landing roles in animation "Les Contes de la Nuit" and the Oscar-nominated "Timbuktu". The sounds of Mali given a Western twist
Diawara hasn't stopped touring since achieving her mainstream breakthrough, taking her unique blend of traditional Southern Mali sounds and Western influences to North and South America, Asia, Europe and Australia. She's also continued her collaborative streak, performing or recording with the likes of Omara Portuondo, Mayra Andrade and Disclosure, and sharing the stage with Bassekou Kouyate for her debut at the Festival Sur Le Niger. Fans of Diawara's sensuous tones and virtuoso guitar skills should look forward to a show featuring all the highlights from her 2011 debut and 2018 sophomore, "Fenfo (Something to Say)", including the singles "Nterini", "Bonya" and "Bissi". Diawara is also no stranger to putting her own spin on English-language classics, with Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground" and Nina Simone's "Sinnerman" just a few of the tracks she's covered in a live setting.
