Fed Cup TicketsThe Fed Cup is an annual team-based women's competition played between the top countries of the world. Just like its male counterpart, the Davis Cup, the Fed Cup is the closest thing the sport has to a World Cup of tennis. The idea for a woman’s international competition was originally conceived by Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman in 1919. Though the idea didn’t gain traction, the United States and Great Britain did agree to meet for an annual match in 1923. The idea for a team-based international tournament was revived decades later to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the International Tennis Federation. Originally known as the Federation Cup, the inaugural contest, which was held at the Queen’s Club in London, came down to a final matchup between Australia and the United States. All-time greats such as Billie Jean King and Margaret Court played in the matchup. The United States holds the all-time record with 18 titles in 30 finals appearances. The Czech Republic ranks second all-time with an impressive 11 victories in 12 appearances. What is the format of the Fed Cup?The Fed Cup brings together more than 100 teams from all over the world. However, only 12 teams make the final Fed Cup tournament, including the two previous finalists, the host nation, a wild card team and the eight qualifiers from previous rounds. In the initial stage of the tournament, there are four groups of three teams each. The four group winners advance to the single-elimination semifinals. The two winners of the semifinals then compete for the championships. The remaining teams that don’t qualify the final Fed Cup tournament can still compete in the regional tournaments. The three regions are the Americas, Asia/Oceania and Europe/Africa. Matchups adhere to a best-of-five format with four singles and a double.
When does the Fed Cup take place? The 2020 Fed Cup takes place between April 14th and 19th at the clay courts of the Laszlo Papp Budapest Sports Arena in Budapest, Hungary. The venue will be the site of the next two Fed Cups as well. However, there are several other important dates throughout the year. On February 7th and 8th, the Fed Cup qualifiers will take place to determine which eight teams advance to the final tournament. The losing teams from the qualifiers will compete in a special playoff format on April 17th and 18th. The winning teams in the playoffs return to the qualifiers in the next year. The losing teams will compete in the regional group events in the following year. The group events, divided into multiple divisions, start on February 3rd and June 8th.
Who was the winner of the previous Fed Cup?During the 2019 Fed Cup, France triumphed over Australia 3-2. Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic beat Ashleigh Barty and Samantha Stosur in a doubles match to clinch the title. The decisive match ended in two sets 6-4 and 6-3.
What is the Fed Cup like? The Fed Cup is one of the few annual tournaments to give fans an opportunity to follow and cheer for their own country in a team-based format. The rules and regulations are similar to singles tennis, except the teams play a series of matches to determine the winner. Each annual Fed Cup may conceivably take place in a different venue with a different set of activities and events, so keep an eye on the schedule. During the matches, fans are expected to follow appropriate tennis etiquette while a point is played.
Which events are similar to the Fed Cup?If you enjoy high-quality international tennis, then you might want to check out the Davis Cup on the men’s side. The rules are broadly similar, except 18 teams compete in the final tournament.
