The dominant Pacific nation
Fiji Rugby competed in their first international match in 1924 against Western Samoa and later that same year, played the first of many test series against Pacific nation rivals Tonga Rugby Union. While enjoying their debut tour of New Zealand Rugby in 1939, captain Ratu Sir George Cakobau helped to create the team's signature cibi dance, while other Fiji milestones include their first tours of Australia Rugby in 1951 and Europe in 1964, a famous victory against the British Lions in 1977 and their first full test in 1985 against Wales. Fiji Rugby competed in the sport's inaugural world tournament in 1987, where they impressively reached the quarter-finals. They also went on to qualify for the group stages in 1991, 1999 and 2003. The team once again reached the last eight in 2007 thanks to victories over Japan, Canada and Wales. Having lifted a record nine Tri-Pacific Nations Championships, Fiji continued their dominance over Tonga and Western Samoa by lifting four consecutive Pacific Nations Cups in the late 2010s and also by qualifying for their sixth consecutive world tournament. The atmospheric ANZ National Stadium
Fiji Rugby play their home games at the ANZ Stadium, a 15,000-capacity venue that has also been used by Fiji's national football team, domestic side Suva FC and short-lived rugby union franchise Suva Highlanders. Built in 1951 and renovated in both 1978 and 2012, the stadium has staged events in several South Pacific Games and is at its noisiest and most atmospheric when neighbouring rugby nations Tonga and Western Samoa pay a visit. Memorable games at the venue over the years include Fiji's victory over Tier 1 nation Scotland in 1998 and wins against Italy in both 2014 and 2017. Several Fijian greats have graced its pitch, such as most-capped player Nicky Little, all-time highest try scorer Vereniki Goneva and long-time captain Akapusi Qera, with other notable names including Sireli Bobo, Bill Cavubati and Isa Nacewa.
