Finding Neverland is the story of real-life Peter Pan author J.M. Barrie and the events that led him from a struggling writer to a respected novelists and playwright. The play is a loose adaptation of the Academy Award-winning 2004 film of the same name. This musical version of Finding Neverland debuted in Leicester, England in 2012 before moving on to Broadway in 2015.
For those new to the Peter Pan saga, the story is set in 19th century London, where three children (two boys and a girl) live with their parents and huge dog, Nana. Peter Pan, a boy who never grew up, listens longingly outside of the children's bedroom window to their nightly bedtime stories. This goes on for quite some time until one evening he slips, is nearly caught and in the process loses his shadow. He asks Wendy, the girl in the family, to reattach his shadow and subsequently asks the children to travel to Neverland (where children never grow old) with him, so that Wendy can take care of his band of "lost boys."
The music and lyrics for Finding Neverland are written by Gary Barlow of Take That and songwriter Eliot Kennedy. The show's book was written by James Graham. The Kansas City production will be staged at the Music Hall in downtown Kansas City. The touring cast includes Billy Harrigan Tighe and J.M. Barrie, John Davidson as Captain Hook and Christine Dwyer at Sylvia Llewelyn Davies.
