More about the FireKeepers Casino 400
The Michigan International Speedway is known as the fastest track on the circuit. Daytona and Talladega require drivers to have a restrictor plate on their engines in order to reduce speeds. Since there is no such requirement at Michigan, it is not uncommon for drivers to reach speeds up to 220 mph on the straightaways. Since the track does not have high banking, drivers can maintain much of this speed into the turn. The track has always been fast, but a 2012 repaving of the track made it even faster. The race goes for 200 laps over the 2-mile track. The FireKeepers Casino 400 is broken down into three heats. The first two heats are 60 laps, and the final heat is 80 laps.
The FireKeepers Casino 400 experience
Michigan is one of NASCAR fans' favorite tracks on the circuit. Campers can set up shop extremely close to Turn 1 where they'll get up close and personal with the race cars. The Michigan International Speedway Welcome Center provides fans with interactive and informative exhibits. There is a mock pit where fans can try their hand at changing tires and rapidly gassing up cars. The track continuously makes improvements and upgrades to enhance the fan experience. There are excellent sightlines at the track that allow nearly all fans to see the entire 2-mile circuit during the race.
History of the FireKeepers Casino 400
For many years, this race was the closest one to the auto manufacturers that made the race engines, giving the engineers an up-close look at the cars they built. The early days of Michigan International Speedway were synonymous with the legendary Wood Brothers. The team won six of the early races on this track, two of which were with Cale Yarborough at the wheel. Bill Elliot has won this race four times, and the icon Dale Earnhardt Sr. has won twice here. However, the most dominant driver that this race has ever seen was David Pearson who won this race four times in five years. Devoted fans can remember Dale Earnahrdt Jr. breaking his 76-race winless streak with a victory in this race on Father's Day.
