The Frederick Keys are the Class-A Advanced affiliate for Major League Baseball's Baltimore Orioles. The Frederick Keys came into existence just before the 1989 season when the Orioles relocated their Class-A Advanced affiliate from Hagerstown, Md. The "Keys" were named after legendary composer Francis Scott Key, who wrote the Star Spangled Banner and was born in Frederick County. After the relocation to Frederick, the team experienced immediate success, winning the Carolina League Championship in only their second season in their new home. The team made a few playoff appearances after the 1990 championship but didn't win another league title until 2005. The 2005 team, with a record of 79-61, put up the best record in the Carolina League. The Keys returned to the League Championship Series in 2006 but came up just short before winning the franchise's third championship in 2007. The Keys won their fourth Carolina League title in 2011 but have only made the postseason once since then. The 2020 Keys will look to rebound from a 2019 season that saw them go 53-84.
