This year the Frozen Apple will feature the Penn State Nittany Lions going up against the Cornell Big Red. Cornell is one of the most storied programs in all of college hockey. In 1970 the Big Red team went 29-0 on their way to a National Championship and they are still the only men's college hockey team to have ever gone through an entire season undefeated. They compete in the Ivy League and the ECAC and have won the ECAC Tournament Championship twelve times, more than any other school, and won the Ivy League championship twenty-one times which is behind only Harvard who have won twenty-three titles. Penn State has its own long hockey history, one which has seen the team compete at both the NCAA Division I level as well as at the club level. The team played a handful of games in 1909-1910 but was not officially recognized by the university until 1938. The modern era of Penn State hockey dates back to 1971 when the school played at the club level. Today the Nittany Lions are part of the Big Ten Conference, which formed a hockey conference before the 2013-2014 season by combining Big Ten schools that were competing in WCHA and the CCHA for hockey.

The last two rounds of the championship tournament are referred to as the Frozen Four, in reference to the wildly popular NCAA Men's Basketball semifinals and finals, the Final Four.
The Cornell Big Red are not unfamiliar with playing at Madison Square Garden and have played there four previous times.
