Fun Home
Fun Home is a musical that tells the story of cartoonist Alison Bechdel as she attempts to make sense of her life, beginning with a deep dive into her past. She focuses particularly on her relationship with her father and her effort to unlock the mysteries surrounding his life. He was a closeted bisexual, consumed by his “self-loathing.” At the same time, Alison, coming-of-age, is struggling with her own sexuality and how her life seems to parallel her father’s life.
Based on Alison Bechdel’s graphic novel, Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, the musical opened off-Broadway in September 2013. Considered a “musical with a book,” lyrics are by Lisa Kron and music is by Jeanine Tesori.
The musical opened on Broadway in April 2015, receiving positive reviews. Nominated for 12 Tony Awards, Fun Home won in five categories: Best Musical, Best Director, Best Book, Best Original Score and Best Actor. Fun Home is the first Broadway musical with a lesbian leading role.
Alison Bechdel
Alison Bechdel is a cartoonist, best known for her popular and long-running, self-syndicated comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For. According to Ms. Magazine, this award-winning generational chronicle is “one of the preeminent oeuvres in the comics genre, period.”
Bechdel also creates graphic novel memoirs, similar to Fun Home. Her recent release, Are You My Mother? A Comic Drama explores her relationship with her mother, as well as looks at the “theories of the 20th-century British psychoanalyst, Donald Winnicott.”
