Fun Home the Musical
Fun Home is a musical drama based on the New York Times best-selling graphic novel memoir of the same name by Alison Bechdel.
Fun Home is about a woman, Alison, who looks back at her relationship with her closeted, gay father at different important times in their lives together, culminating in his death by suicide a few months after she told her parents she was a lesbian.
The musical debuted on Broadway in April 2015. It has since garnered 12 Tony Award nominations, winning five, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. The play debuted off-Broadway in 2013 and was directed by Sam Gold, who won the Tony for Best Direction.
Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori spent several years developing and workshopping the musical. Tesori had worked on several musicals, including the adaptation of the movie Shrek and her own creation Caroline, or Change. She made Broadway history by being the first woman to have two musicals running at the same time (Caroline and her adaptation of Thoroughly Modern Millie). Kron has written several plays that have been staged throughout the country and internationally. She wrote In the Wake and Well; these and other plays have received numerous award nominations and several wins.
