Fun Home is the 2015 Tony Award-winning Broadway musical produced at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis. Based on the best-selling graphic memoir by writer and artist Alison Bechdel, the musical features the story of Alison as she tries to figure out her confusing and unstable childhood and how it relates to her life.; Called “uplifting” and “exquisite,” Fun Home inspires audiences with hope and compassion.
The New York Times describes Fun Home as “extraordinary, a rare beauty that pumps fresh air into Broadway.” Critics and audiences called this “the event” of the Broadway season. This musical began as an off-Broadway production and met wild success with numerous off-Broadway awards before moving to Broadway where it has received rave reviews and even greater success.
This groundbreaking musical tells the coming-of-age story of Alison at three different ages. It examines her parents and how she relates to them through grown-up eyes as the story seamlessly shifts from 10-year-old Alison to 19-year-old Alison to 43-year-old Alison to see the story and unravel her complicated childhood. She explores the mysteries of her childhood, her difficult relationship with her father and the anxieties of growing up.
Awards and Recognition
Fun Home won five Tony Awards in 2015, including Best Musical, Best Book of Musical and Best Original Score. As an off-Broadway production the musical won the Obie Award for Musical Theater, the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Musical, received eight Drama Desk Award nominations and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2014. It also received a 2016 Grammy Award nomination for Best Musical Theater Album.
The Orpheum Theatre brings popular theater and Broadway productions to Minneapolis. It opened in 1921 and has played host to legendary performers including the Marx Brothers, Jack Benny, and George Burns. In 1993, the theater was restored and since then has been a destination for Broadway shows and many critically acclaimed performances. Located in the downtown Cultural District, visitors can easily get to the theater by public transportation, car or on foot – for anyone staying in downtown Minneapolis.
