The Genesee Theatre in Waukegan, Illinois, was built in 1927 as an upscale, motion picture venue. Local contractors spared no expense in matching it to the flourishing city north of Chicago. The faade was built from terra cotta and pressed brick and the interior fashioned from yards of tapestry fabric and marble from quarries in Italy. The main entrance, which opened into a lobby, hung with a huge chandelier. The theater opened its doors on Christmas day in 1927 with four sell-out shows for the classic film, The Valley of the Giants. An economic decline and the rise of cineplexes forced the Genesee Theatre venue to close in 1989. The city purchased the building in 1999 and began renovations to open it as a music and variety show venue. Rapper Soulja Boy used his performance at the Genesee Theatre venue to film a video. The theater has hosted shows by several performers, such as Cheap Trick and comedy by Steve Martin. Grab your Genesee Theatre tickets at StubHub.
