The George Strait Team Roping Classic was first held in 1982 and has been as long-lasting and legendary as the musical career of the renowned country music singer who originally organized the event. The 2014 George Strait Team Roping Classic winner received $750,000 in prizes while the whole event handed out over one million dollars in prizes. Team roping is a long running tradition in rodeo that dates back to skills ranchers first perfected in 19th century Spain and later were adopted in the Americas as ranching grew to the New World. In the early 1800's there were a handful of loosely organized rodeo contests in the western United States and northern Mexico, but it was only after the Civil War in 1872 that the first truly organized rodeo competition was held in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Rodeo is incredibly popular in the western United States and Canada to this day and the professional rodeo circuit is governed by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and Women's Professional Rodeo Association.
